Dr Fionnuala Breathnach graduated from Trinity College Dublin in 1997.Fionnuala pursued Higher Specialist Training in Obstetrics and Gynaecology at the Rotunda Hospital, Coombe Women and Infants’ University Hospital and St. James’ Hospital in Dublin. She worked as Assistant Master at the Rotunda from 2004 to 2005 before completing a Maternal Fetal Medicine fellowship program in the Rotunda Hospital and in Columbia University Medical Center, New York.
As a certified specialist in Maternal Fetal Medicine, her practice focuses on obstetric care and obstetric ultrasound in particular. Her clinical areas of interest include high risk pregnancy, prenatal screening and diagnosis, and twin pregnancy. Her practice offers prenatal screening for chromosomal abnormality, prenatal diagnostic techniques including amniocentesis and chorionic villus sampling (CVS) and advanced prenatal ultrasound services. She is the lead obstetrician in the combined Obstetric-Endocrine service at the Rotunda which provides a dedicated multidisciplinary service to women with diabetes in pregnancy. This dedicated service offers consultant-led integrated prenatal and postnatal care to women with diabetes, provided by a team composed of consultant obstetrician, consultant specialist endocrinologist, dietician and specialist midwives.
Fionnuala also offers integrated prenatal care to women whose pregnancies have been complicated by a prenatal diagnosis of fetal congenital heart disease. This service is coordinated with our paediatric cardiology colleagues in Our Lady’s Hospital for Sick Children, Crumlin.
She has been the recipient of several research awards and she has published and presented internationally on endocrine disease in pregnancy, prenatal diagnosis and prenatal screening for fetal abnormality. She is the lead researcher on a multicentre national study on twin pregnancy in Ireland.
As Senior Lecturer in Maternal Fetal Medicine with the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland, she is involved in medical education at both undergraduate and postgraduate level.
She is married and has three children.
