MÁIRE MILNER, MD, MRCOG
Consultant Senior Lecturer in Obstetrics and Gynaecology
Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital, Drogheda and Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland
Maire Milner qualified from University College Cork in 1981. She did Vocational Training over three years in the United Kingdom where obstetrics and gynaecology was her final post. Within a few months she decided on a career change and has worked in the speciality ever since. She has worked in Newport South Wales, Manchester and completed two years registrar rotation based at the Jessop Women’s Hospital in Sheffield. It was here she became interested in research, becoming involved in work on fetal insulin levels with Dr. Bob Fraser.
In 1989 Maire joined RCSI as lecturer with Prof. Harrison at the Rotunda. She opened Ireland’s first menopause clinic later that year. Enormously successful, this incorporated bone densitometry and a lipid clinic. It continues to this day. She undertook a controlled study over two years of two HRT types, and obtained an MD by thesis in 1995. By 1992 she had been appointed senior registrar/assistant master at the Rotunda, a post she held until 1999. She gained further experience at the Royal Victoria Hospital, Belfast in obstetric ultrasound.
Her experience in the Rotunda was excellent preparation for both her consultant posts in the North-East. Appointed to Cavan in 1999, she introduced the principles of clinical governance documentation reform, audit and regular meetings with case discussion. Furthermore she implemented a suite of protocols into the obstetric unit. She joined Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital, Drogheda in 2001. Here she has also been to the fore in implementing change. She re-introduced the annual clinical report from the Maternity unit in 2003 which has now been published for the last three years. She was appointed Senior Lecturer to RCSI in 2005 and thoroughly enjoys teaching at all levels
