Dermot MacDonald is one of the most accomplished obstetrician gynaecologists in the history of this speciality in Ireland. As the Principal Investigator of the internationally acclaimed Dublin Fetal Heart Rate Monitoring Trial, his contributions to this specialty have changed the way obstetrics is practiced today. Amongst the prestigious posts held previously by Prof. MacDonald has been Master of the National Maternity Hospital, Dublin, from 1977 to 1983, and Head of the RCSI-UCD Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at Penang Medical College, Malaysia. He is one of only a handful of clinicians internationally who have been bestowed the award of Honorary Fellow of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists. Currently Prof. MacDonald is responsible for directing the undergraduate medical education programme at the National Maternity Hospital.
